A rough collie turns its head to the right, caught in three-quarter profile against a bare ochre ground that throws all the attention onto the coat. The painter worked the sable and black fur in long directional strokes, dry-brushed through the ruff so the weave of the canvas reads in the lighter passages, and kept the eye and muzzle tight and observed against the loose handling of the mane. It carries a signature in the lower right reading "Jheuts," dated 1936, that I could not match to any recorded painter. The stepped oak frame appears original to the work.

Condition

The canvas is on its original keyed stretcher with a central crossbar, tacked at the edges. Fine craquelure runs across the paint film, more pronounced in the ochre background at the upper right, consistent with the 1936 date. There is a small spot of paint loss in the background to the right of the muzzle. The signature and date sit in the lower right of the painted surface. The reverse shows scattered paint marks where the artist wiped the brush, along with age toning to the canvas, and carries no labels or inscriptions. I have described only what is visible in the photographs and in hand; I have not examined the work under UV and make no claim about retouch or restoration beyond what is stated here. The oak frame is structurally sound with minor surface wear and is wired to hang. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
