Two English setters work a pheasant at the edge of a still pond, one dog frozen with its head thrown up at the rising cock bird, the second pushing in low behind it, while a gun in a soft hat moves up through the birches at the right. The painter signed it "Van Daele" in the lower left. It carries the label of a Brussels framer on the reverse, and it comes in a deep gilt composition frame with foliate and cartouche corners. The setters are the whole show here, all that white coat worked wet against the autumn grass.
The painting is on its original unlined canvas, tacked to a keyed wooden stretcher with a single vertical cross-member. There is a clean slit in the canvas roughly one inch long in the lower foreground grass, left of center and near the bottom edge, in a passage of painted grass away from the dogs, the pheasant, and the sky. The edges of the slit are clean with no associated paint loss or lifting visible in the area around it. It is disclosed here and shown close up in the photographs so you can judge it for yourself. A buyer may choose to have it closed by a conservator or leave it as is; at normal viewing distance it sits low in the composition and reads as minor.
The paint surface is otherwise stable, with the fine texture and even toning you would expect of a canvas of this age. The signature is legible in the lower left. The gilt composition frame shows rubbing and small losses to the high points of the corners and crest, with a few areas of the gilt worn through to the ground, consistent with age and handling. Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the size and weight of the item. Local pickup is available at the AMD Warehouse.
All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
If your piece arrives damaged, please photograph the damage immediately (including packaging), contact us within 48 hours at austynmariedesign@gmail.com, and do not discard any packaging.
