The form comes from the French card game of the same name, and the clever part is the shade: as the candles burned down, players lowered the green tole shade on the central rod using the little brass thumb lever, keeping the light on the cards and the glare out of their eyes. This example is silverplate over base metal with a shaped, scalloped tray base, a cast scroll handle, two candle arms, and the original adjustable mechanism that still works. It has been rewired to US standards.
This lamp is in good vintage condition with honest wear consistent with its age and use. There is quite a bit of silverplate loss across the base metal, most visible on the tray, the candle cups, and the central rod, showing the warmer base metal beneath. The candle sleeves are plastic, a replacement from more recent years, and are slightly discolored. The finial does not appear to be original to the lamp. The green tole shade is slightly bent out of shape and shows scuffs across the exterior, spotting and discoloration on the cream-painted interior, and some gilding loss along the trim. The lamp has been rewired to US standards and is in working order. The shade raises and lowers on the central rod as intended, and the brass adjustment lever functions.
While this lamp has been rewired, we strongly recommend having it inspected and, if needed, rewired by a licensed electrician before use. All antique and vintage items are shipped from our warehouse in Bluffdale, Utah. Each piece is carefully packed by hand using archival materials and custom crating when necessary.
Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the size and weight of the item. Local pickup is available at the AMD Warehouse.
All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
If your piece arrives damaged, please photograph the damage immediately (including packaging), contact us within 48 hours at austynmariedesign@gmail.com, and do not discard any packaging.
