French Ironstone Soap Dish, Hunting Dog Transfer
French Ironstone Soap Dish, Hunting Dog Transfer

I love when a plain washstand piece carries decoration you would expect on something far more formal. This is a French ironstone soap dish, the open kind with raised bars across the base that lift the soap up out of the water so it drains and dries. The draw is the picture. A green transfer of a hunting dog working through tall reeds wraps the front, the kind of gun dog scene you find on sporting china, here on a small everyday object. The molded scalloped rim and soft overall crazing give it real age and character.
The piece is in good antique condition with honest wear. The glaze shows overall fine crazing across the whole body, inside and out, which is normal aging for this type and not damage. There is light brown staining and a few small surface flecks to the interior well, consistent with long use as a soap dish. The green transfer on the front is clear and well defined. The floral transfer on the reverse is present and slightly softer. The molded scalloped rim is intact with no chips or cracks found in hand. The three raised drainer bars are all intact. A small hand-painted blue cross sits in the interior base, most likely a workshop or decorator's tally mark rather than a maker's mark. No maker's mark, pattern name, or country mark was located on the piece.
