Two white swans and a goose drift across still water while a figure in a red cap sits watching from a low grassy point, the far bank dense with conifers and a few trees already turning for autumn. A small oil painted directly onto a wood panel by an untrained hand, the kind of quiet lakeside view made for the domestic market rather than the exhibition wall. The out-of-scale figure and the flattened water are part of its character, the marks of a self-taught painter working from feeling rather than academic training.

Lakeside landscape with swans, a goose, and a seated figure

Vintage. No dated signature, label, inscription, or construction marker is present, so a firm date cannot be given. The paint craquelure and slight warp of the panel are consistent with real age but do not fix a year.

Naive. Painted by a self-taught hand, with simplified foliage masses, flattened water, and a figure out of scale with the bank. Naive here describes the manner of the painting, not a formal movement.

Wood panel, paint applied directly with no visible prepared ground along the edge losses
Condition

This is a small unframed oil painted directly onto a wood panel, and it should be read as an aged decorative piece rather than a pristine one. The paint surface carries a fairly wide craquelure network, clearest across the sky and the foliage, along with scattered small specks of loss. The panel has a slight warp consistent with age. The top edge is irregular, hand-cut or naturally split, and there is paint loss along the bottom edge and the worn edges generally. A modern brass sawtooth hanger is screwed to the reverse and is a later addition, not original to the work. I have not cleaned, stabilized, or restored anything; it is offered exactly as found. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
