A Victorian dome-top keepsake box in English walnut, with a parquetry panel inlaid across the lid in diamonds of contrasting specimen woods. Rosewood, satinwood, walnut, and a single burr panel set into the center, all framed by a rosewood crossband and fine boxwood stringing. The form is called sarcophagus, and the working lock still turns with its original key. A small piece, but the cabinetwork on the lid is the kind of quiet craftsmanship that rewards a closer look.

Condition

The box is in good antique condition with honest age-appropriate wear. The parquetry panel on the lid is intact across the entire surface, with no losses to the specimen wood diamonds, the rosewood crossbanding, or the boxwood stringing. The brass lock is in working order and the original key is present and turns the lock. Both small turned wood side knobs are original and secure. The brass hinges are sound and the lid sits properly closed.

The interior was originally lined in silk or velvet, almost certainly in a rose or pink tone based on the pigment residue that was present. The lining has been removed and the interior has been sanded clean. The interior is now bare pine, ready for use as-is or for relining if the next owner prefers. A small inked mark, likely a retailer or inventory mark, remains visible on the interior floor.

The walnut exterior shows light wear consistent with age, with some minor scuffs and surface marks across the back and sides. The underside has been covered with a dark blue velvet panel at some point in the box's life. This is a later addition and not original to the piece. It can be left in place or removed at the buyer's discretion.
