A Victorian novelty inkwell cast as a recumbent King Charles Spaniel, the hinged head lifting at the collar to reveal an ink reservoir set into the chest. The fur is modeled with confident, well-defined strokes throughout, and the beaded collar is crisp. This is a compact, solid piece with the kind of honest age patina that photographs beautifully. King Charles Spaniels were the quintessential Victorian parlor dog, kept by Queen Victoria herself throughout her reign, and their image turned up on everything from Staffordshire figures to desk accessories of exactly this type. A working hinge and no structural damage make this a very usable piece as well as a decorative one.

Condition

The inkwell is in good antique condition with age-appropriate wear throughout. The silverplate has worn unevenly across the surface, with the raised areas of the fur, the head, and the collar retaining more plating and the recesses having developed a warm, mottled patina with some verdigris in the deeper grooves. There are no cracks, no repairs, and no losses to the casting. The hinge at the collar is functional and the head opens and closes cleanly. The ink liner is absent. The shaped base, which is integral to the piece, shows oxidation consistent with age. Overall a solid, presentable example with honest character.
