Victorian Silverplate Tray by Roberts & Belk, Sheffield, Circa 1885, with engraved monogram cartouche and pierced gallery border on three ball feet. Made by one of Sheffield's well-regarded Victorian electroplate manufacturers, this round salver carries their R&B mark, bird device, and pattern number 3779 on the underside. The central field is engraved with a bright-cut armorial cartouche featuring a pointed shield, ribbon bow, trailing flower chains, and a script monogram reading "CL," the kind of personalized engraving that was added to order at purchase. The pierced gallery running the full circumference is intact and crisp.
The tray is structurally sound with no dents, no damage to the gallery, and all three ball feet intact and stable. The engraving is sharp and undamaged throughout. The plating shows significant wear across the field, with the copper base metal showing through in several areas, most visibly toward the center and in patches across the surface. This is honest age wear consistent with a piece that was used and handled over many decades, and it does not affect the structural integrity or the decorative appeal of the piece. The gallery and outer rim retain good plating. The tray has not been re-plated. Surface tarnish is present and will respond to polishing, though the worn areas will remain as they are.
