Antique Victorian Silverplate Casket Inkstand with Two Glass Wells
Antique Victorian Silverplate Casket Inkstand with Two Glass Wells

A well-made Victorian silverplate inkstand in the casket form, with a hinged roll-top lid that opens in two panels to reveal a pair of original glass inkwells with beaded silverplate collars and a central pen trough. The design is architectural and deliberate: beaded borders run along every edge, four corner posts are capped with ball finials, four matching ball feet raise the case, and a small urn finial sits centered on the hinge rail. It is the kind of desk piece that was made for a serious writing table, not a decorative afterthought. The glass wells are intact and original to the stand. The center trough retains its small square glass lid with ball finial.
The inkstand is in fair antique condition with honest use wear throughout. The silverplate exterior shows surface scratches across all panels and some cloudiness consistent with age and handling. There is moderate plate wear, most visible on the side panels where the base metal shows through in places. Two of the four ball feet have been reglued at the joint; the repairs are stable and the feet sit flush, though the adhesive is visible on close inspection. The roll-top lid opens and closes and the hinge functions. The two original glass inkwells are present and intact, each with its original beaded silverplate collar; neither inkwell has a lid. The center trough retains its original square glass lid with ball finial. The interior of the stand shows verdigris residue in the pen trough and around the well collars, consistent with long exposure to iron gall ink. No denting noted to the case. No marks found on any surface.
