The corner mounts are what catch you first, gilt brass scrolled over the corners and a matching clasp that still closes, set against deep green pebbled morocco with horizontal ribbing across both boards. This is a Victorian photograph album, English, with all-gilt edges and heavy card leaves cut with arched windows for cartes de visite and smaller gem portraits. Four photographs remain, including a uniformed young man and two infants. One window is inscribed by hand on the reverse, "Aunt Ellie Flintham, Born 1810," and one portrait carries the backstamp of the Buxton Instantaneous Photographic Studio at 47 Spring Gardens in Manchester. The 1810 date belongs to the sitter, not the album, which dates to roughly the 1880s on its construction and the studio's trade style. It reads as a serious library object more than a full family archive, and the brass work is the reason to own it.

Condition

The morocco is sound with even wear to the ribbing and light rubbing at the corners and spine ends. The gilt brass corner mounts are firm and the clasp closes and holds. Gilt edges remain bright. Internally the card leaves are clean and stable, with the usual light soiling and a few mount edges lifting where pages have been turned over the years. Four photographs are present and the remaining windows are empty. The handwritten inscription on the reverse of one window is legible. One photograph retains a clear studio backstamp. A well-preserved example overall, structurally tight and displaying well.
