Victorian Copper Imperial Pint Pub Measure Cup
Victorian Copper Imperial Pint Pub Measure Cup

A working Victorian pub measure with the kind of paperwork you usually don't get on a piece of antique copper. The body is stamped with the crown and VR mark of Queen Victoria, the verification number 174, and the word PINT, all applied by an official Inspector of Weights and Measures certifying this vessel as a legally accurate Imperial pint. Verification number 174 corresponds to Leeds. The body is coopered copper with a brass rim band and a tinned interior, and most unusually for a working pub measure, the front is hand-engraved with scrolling foliate decoration. The base carries an engraved D cypher, likely the publican's mark identifying the establishment that owned it.
The tankard is in honest used condition consistent with a working Victorian pub measure that saw regular service. The body is structurally sound and the form is true. The verification stamps are crisp and fully legible. The hand-engraved decoration to the front and the D cypher on the base both read clearly. The copper retains a warm aged patina with scattered surface marks, light dings, and verdigris at the seams and joints, all consistent with age and use. The tinned interior shows wear with darkening and patina from long service. There is a split at the upper handle terminal where the handle joins the body just below the rim, with two period brass braze repairs visible at the joint. Despite the visible damage, the handle is structurally solid and does not move or flex when handled. The repairs are old and consistent with the working life of a pub measure that would have been brazed back into service rather than discarded so it could continue to pass inspection. The applied stepped base is intact and the brass rim is secure.
