A small Victorian-era hand chip-carved picture frame, English, circa 1880 to 1900. The carved face runs in two distinct registers: an outer border of crosshatch diamond points and an inner border of repeating trefoil motifs, both hand-cut with a chisel in the English folk carving tradition that flourished during the Arts and Crafts period. The original brass ring-and-knob hanging hardware is in place. Glass is present. This scale works beautifully for a cabinet card photograph, a small botanical or devotional print, or anything that benefits from a frame with visible hand labor and honest age.

Condition

The frame is in good antique condition with honest age-appropriate wear throughout. The chip-carved decoration is intact across the face with no significant losses to the carved registers. The dark stained finish has patinated evenly with age. The original brass ring-and-knob hanger is in place and functional, with normal surface wear to the brass. Glass is present and intact. The cardboard backing is original and shows age-related staining and some looseness at the edges. There is an illegible handwritten inscription on the top rail of the back, likely recording the carver's name or a date, which is a genuine period detail even though it cannot be read. The frame structure is sound and the piece hangs well.
