Compiled by William Moodie and published by David Bryce & Son of Glasgow, this miniature songbook gathers traditional Scottish lyrics alongside printed musical notation, titles that would have been familiar to any household in the late 19th century. "Come Under My Plaidie" and pieces like it were not obscure folk survivals at the time of publication. They were the sound of a shared culture, and books like this one were the vessels that carried them forward through an era of rapid industrialization and unsettling change. The Scottish folk revival of the 1880s and 1890s was as much about preservation as it was about sentiment, and this little volume is a artifact of that impulse at its most intimate and portable.
What makes this copy genuinely special is the binding. The wooden boards are Mauchline ware, produced in Ayrshire and among the most distinctive decorative objects of the Victorian souvenir trade. The transfer image of Dryburgh Abbey on the front board places it firmly in the tradition of Scottish topographical keepsakes, the kind of thing brought back from a journey or given as a thoughtful gift. The black spine is gilt-tooled with small floral ornaments, all edges are gilt, and the interior opens onto decorative green floral endpapers before giving way to the printed text and notation. It is a beautifully resolved object, and it occupies a rare position in the collector market: desirable both to book collectors drawn to the miniature format and to decorative arts buyers who seek out Mauchline ware in any form.
The wooden boards are intact and the transfer image of Dryburgh Abbey is clear and well-preserved with no significant fading or abrasion. The black spine retains its gilt floral tooling with light wear consistent with age. All edges gilt remain bright. The decorative green floral endpapers are present and clean. The text block is tight. A sound and attractive copy of a fragile format that frequently survives in far worse condition.
