A compact and sculptural example of early 20th century trench art, formed from the base of a brass artillery shell dated 1912. The piece has been thoughtfully repurposed with hand-formed iron prongs, creating a stable three-footed stand that reads as both functional and decorative. The contrast between the warm brass and the darker forged metal gives it a grounded, utilitarian character.
Originally part of a military shell casing, objects like this were often transformed by soldiers into practical or keepsake pieces during or shortly after wartime. While the exact intended use is open to interpretation, the form lends itself naturally as a small holder or stand for a variety of uses. It works well styled as a layered accent on a shelf, tabletop, or desk, adding a subtle sense of history and texture to a space.
Antique condition consistent with age throughout. The brass shell base shows patina, oxidation, and surface wear with darker toning and spotting that reflect its age and history. The hand-formed iron prongs show oxidation and the slight irregularities you would expect from hand-worked metal. The piece is structurally sound and stable, sitting level on its three-point base with good balance. No repairs or later additions. A solid, honest example of early 20th-century trench art.
