A charming late Victorian edition of The History of Sandford and Merton, beautifully bound in leather and marbled boards, with a Christmas 1890 gift inscription that gives it real period character. Originally written by Thomas Day in the late eighteenth century, this famous children's classic follows spoiled Tommy Merton and the honest, hardworking Harry Sandford, using their story to teach lessons about virtue, humility, and character. For generations, it was one of the best-known moral and educational books for young readers in Britain.

This copy has a particularly appealing presentation, with a richly gilt-decorated spine, marbled paper-covered boards, matching marbled endpapers, and illustrated plates throughout. It works on several levels: as an example of Victorian juvenile literature, as a decorative antique book, and as a copy with personal history thanks to the inscription reading, “To dear Will, Christmas 1890, With Mama’s & Papa’s best love.” A lovely piece for collectors of children's books, Victorian bindings, or antique books with gift-book charm.

The three-quarter leather binding is attractive and presents well, with light rubbing and minor surface wear to the boards and spine consistent with age and handling. Gilt spine decoration remains bright and fully legible. The marbled boards are sound. Interior is generally clean with age toning throughout and a few scattered spots of foxing or light soiling, all expected for a volume of this period. The gift inscription to the front blank is clear and intact. Illustrated plates are present throughout. A well-preserved Victorian copy that displays very nicely.
