An attractive 1893 Victorian biography in a richly gilt full leather school prize binding, this copy of The Life and Correspondence of Thomas Arnold, D.D. brings together handsome decorative appeal and real cultural substance. Thomas Arnold was one of the defining figures in nineteenth century British education, best known as the influential headmaster of Rugby School. His ideas about discipline, character, and scholarship helped shape the ideal of the English schoolmaster for generations. This edition was written by Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, one of Arnold’s former pupils and later Dean of Westminster, which gives the work both authority and a strong personal connection to its subject.
This copy stands out for its presentation binding and marbled details. The full leather covers and spine are elaborately gilt, the page edges are marbled, and the endpapers carry a bold Victorian marbled pattern. The front board is stamped in gilt for The Grange School, Eastbourne, marking it as a school presentation or prize copy, which suits the subject perfectly. It also includes a portrait frontispiece and additional full page illustrations throughout, adding visual interest beyond the text. A strong choice for collectors of Victorian books, decorative bindings, educational history, and classic English biography.
The full leather prize binding retains its structure and remains attractive overall. Rubbing and wear are present along the joints, spine ends, and corners, and the covers show scuffing, surface scratches, and areas of discoloration and spotting consistent with age and school use. The spine is toned but firmly attached. Marbled endpapers and marbled page edges are present and bright. The interior is generally clean with light age toning throughout. Illustrated plates appear to be present and intact. The gilt school stamp to the upper board is clear and legible. An ink presentation inscription appears near the front portrait, and a small shelf label is present on the rear pastedown. A solid and handsome late Victorian copy with honest wear appropriate to its age and history.
