Published in 1812, The Picture of Glasgow; or, Stranger’s Guide is a fascinating early 19th-century travel and city guide produced at the very moment Glasgow was emerging as a major industrial and commercial power. Written for visitors and curious readers alike, the book offers a detailed portrait of the city’s streets, churches, public buildings, and institutions, while also guiding the reader beyond the city to celebrated Scottish landmarks including Loch Lomond, Loch Katrine, Inveraray, and the Falls of Clyde. It captures Glasgow in transition, balancing civic pride with the Romantic era’s growing fascination with landscape, history, and national identity.

This volume is particularly appealing for collectors due to its engraved illustrations, which provide rare visual documentation of early 19th-century Glasgow before later Victorian redevelopment. These images elevate the book beyond a simple guide, making it both an historical record and a visually engaging piece.

The book is bound in a contemporary red half leather binding with red cloth boards, featuring gilt lettering and rules to the spine. Its compact size and handsome presentation make it ideal for display on shelves, desks, or styled interiors, while still offering substantial historical content. A wonderful example of early Scottish travel literature, this book appeals equally to collectors of antiquarian books, Scottish history enthusiasts, and those seeking distinctive decorative volumes with real substance.

The binding is intact and structurally sound, with the spine firm and the gilt lettering clear and fully legible. Edge and corner wear is present throughout, with surface rubbing and areas of leather loss consistent with a book that was carried and used as intended. The boards show expected fading and handling marks from age. Internally, scattered foxing and age toning appear throughout, more pronounced on the preliminary and final leaves, as is typical for an early 19th-century printed book. The text block and all engraved illustrations are complete and readable. A well-used but honest copy of a book that was never meant to sit still.
