The gilt spine on a full tree calf binding, stamped with the armorial of an English grammar school and awarded at Midsummer 1905, is already a complete story before the book is even opened. Burnley Grammar School, founded in 1559, handed W. Benson of Form III this copy of Thackeray's sharpest social comedy as a prize for third place, less than a year after Smith, Elder printed it. The Chairman of Governors who signed off on that award was Ughtred Kay-Shuttleworth, 1st Baron Shuttleworth, whose family had been tangled up with Burnley Grammar for generations; his father had helped reform the school in the 1870s. The binding itself is the quality you'd commission for a prize: full tree calf with a richly tooled gilt spine on five raised bands, gilt-ruled board borders, marbled endpapers, and marbled page edges. Inside, Thackeray's own illustrations accompany his most celebrated novel, the one where no one is the hero because everyone is too busy pretending to be.
The binding is solid and the boards are firmly attached. The tree calf covering shows age-appropriate patina across the boards with characteristic flaming and mottling intact; there is light surface wear to the board edges and corners, with minor rubbing at the extremities. The gilt spine tooling retains strong definition across all compartments, though there is some fading and light loss to the gilding in the middle panels consistent with handling over 120 years. The gilt-ruled board borders are largely intact with minor interruptions. The prize label on the front pastedown is present and fully legible, cleanly adhered. The marbled endpapers and page edges are bright and show the original green, cream, and gold pattern clearly. The text block is tight and secure. The interior pages appear clean and free of significant foxing based on available photographs; any scattered spotting or toning should be noted by the seller upon final inspection. All plates appear present per the list of illustrations.
