Agnes Strickland's Lives of the Queens of England began as a twelve-volume monument to the women history had largely written around. This 1890 abridged edition, published by George Bell and Sons, distills that work into a single volume covering the queens from the Norman Conquest through Elizabeth of York, the women who sat beside the Plantagenet and Lancaster and York kings. Strickland wrote at a time when treating queens as historical subjects in their own right was itself a kind of argument, and the books found a readership well beyond the scholarly world. The frontispiece steel engraving of Matilda of Flanders, crowned and sceptred, sets the tone for what follows. A handsome period binding in half-leather with a gilt-tooled olive spine, red title label, and marbled boards and edges.

The binding shows honest age throughout. The spine leather retains its gilt tooling and the red title label is legible and intact, but the leather surface shows wear and light loss consistent with a well-used Victorian volume. The marbled boards and edges remain colorful and present. The boards themselves show surface scratching and scuffing across both front and back, visible but not structural. The title page and frontispiece pages carry moderate foxing, scattered brown spots across the page surfaces. The text block appears solid and the book opens and closes without issue. A good reading and display copy, well-worn but holding together.
