A handsome 1913 Oxford edition of The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, presented here in a richly decorated full calf prize binding with bright gilt tooling, marbled endpapers, and all edges gilt. The upper cover bears the crest of the County Council of Durham, Girls’ County School, Bishop Auckland, and the prize label inside records the award for the 1914–1915 school year, giving the book strong presentation provenance and real period character.
Published by Oxford University Press in 1913 and bound in full calf with gilt-decorated spine and covers, this is the kind of edition a school ordered when it wanted to give something worthy of the occasion. The marbled endpapers, the all-edges gilt, the school crest pressed into the upper board: every detail communicates that this copy was made to matter. And it did. The prize label inside records that it was awarded by the Girls' County School in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, for the 1914 to 1915 school year. Someone earned this, and someone presented it with ceremony.
Full calf binding is intact and attractive, with light general rubbing and surface wear consistent with age and careful handling. The gilt decoration remains strong on both the spine and covers. Marbled endpapers present well. The prize label is neatly affixed to the pastedown and fully legible. Pages appear clean throughout with expected light age toning. A solid and decorative copy in very good antique condition.
