This 1874 edition of The Lady of the Lake is a particularly appealing Victorian copy, not just for the text but for the binding itself. The spine is leather with gilt decoration, while the boards are faced in polished wood and centered with an oval photographic image of a Gothic ruin, giving it the look of a presentation or gift book made to stand out on a shelf. It is an unusual and attractive format for one of Walter Scott’s most enduring works.
Scott’s poem, first published in 1810, helped shape 19th century fascination with the Scottish Highlands and remained widely read throughout the Victorian era. This John F. Shaw & Co. edition includes notes and an analytical and explanatory index, showing it was meant for both reading and appreciation. A strong piece for collectors of Walter Scott, Victorian decorative bindings, Scottish literature, and 19th century gift books.
The half leather spine remains attached but is loose at both hinges, with visible separation at the inner joints. This is a structural issue to be aware of, though the spine itself has not detached and the book holds together. The leather shows rubbing and general age wear consistent with a book of this period and use. The wood boards remain presentable. The mounted photographic panel on the front board is intact, with expected surface wear from handling and age. The text block appears complete, with no writing or bookplates noted. Pages show normal age toning throughout, appropriate for a Victorian printing of this date.
