This 1874 edition of The Lady of the Lake is a particularly appealing Victorian copy, not just for the text but for the binding itself. The spine is leather with gilt decoration, while the boards are faced in polished wood and centered with an oval photographic image of a Gothic ruin, giving it the look of a presentation or gift book made to stand out on a shelf. It is an unusual and attractive format for one of Walter Scott’s most enduring works.
Scott’s poem, first published in 1810, helped shape 19th century fascination with the Scottish Highlands and remained widely read throughout the Victorian era. This John F. Shaw & Co. edition includes notes and an analytical and explanatory index, showing it was meant for both reading and appreciation. A strong piece for collectors of Walter Scott, Victorian decorative bindings, Scottish literature, and 19th century gift books.
The book is bound in half leather with sycamore boards, and the gilt-tooled spine with its fleur-de-lis compartments and lettering remains bright and fully legible. The front board is completely detached and is sold loose with the book. It is intact, with no cracks or splits, and the mounted oval photograph on its face is well defined with its decorative border in place and only light surface wear. The leather has crumbling, powdery fraying along both edges of the spine, the reddish-brown degradation known as red rot, and it is ragged where it once met the boards. The spine is still attached to the text block and the rear board appears to hold. Because the front joint has failed, the book needs gentle handling and would suit conservation or rehinging if the new owner wants to use it regularly. The sycamore boards are clean and presentable, with a few fine surface scratches. The text block appears complete, with gilt visible along the page edges. No writing or bookplates were noted, and the paper shows even age toning appropriate for a Victorian printing.

All antique and vintage items are shipped from our warehouse in Bluffdale, Utah. Each piece is carefully packed by hand using archival materials and custom crating when necessary.
Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the size and weight of the item. Local pickup is available at the AMD Warehouse.

All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
