The front board of this volume is stamped in gilt with a name that tells you exactly who it was made for: Miss Clara Brooksbank. The binding itself, a full brown calf with elaborate gilt-tooled borders, a richly decorated five-panel spine with lyre motifs, and marbled text block edges in peacock teal and gold, was made to honour Schubert's music and the young woman who would play it. Inside is a collection of 40 mélodies chosen from his catalog and published in Paris by Brandus et Cie, with the original German texts set alongside French translations by the Romantic poet Émile Deschamps. A lithograph portrait of François Schubert faces the engraved title page, and a handwritten inscription dated 1856 records that the score was lent by one John M. François, placing this copy in active musical use in England within a decade of publication.
The binding is the story of this volume, and it displays well despite honest age. The full calf covers retain good colour and suppleness, the gilt tooling on both boards is largely intact and legible, and the gilt name stamp to the rear board remains clear and sharp. The spine is gilt-decorated with five raised bands and a black morocco label lettered in gilt; the gilt on the spine panels shows some wear but reads well. Both head corners of the spine show leather loss and fraying, with the top of the spine being the most visibly worn area. The lower corners of the boards show rubbing and minor bumping but hold their shape. The marbled text block edges are intact in a peacock pattern of teal, gold, and ochre. The Schott & Co. London retailer label to the paste-down is present and legible.
Internally, the score is complete with all pages present and intact. The lithograph frontispiece portrait is clear with minor foxing at the edges. The title page carries the handwritten inscription and a publisher's stamp, both noted above, and shows general age toning. The flyleaf or terminal blank shows the heaviest foxing in the volume, with moderate to heavy scattered spots and a tideline toward the lower edge. The music pages show general age toning throughout, consistent with paper of this period, with scattered light foxing visible across various leaves. No tears, no missing pages, no annotations to the music pages beyond the original printed text. A sound, displayable copy with honest wear commensurate with its age and use.
