Published in Zürich in 1904 as the ninth edition of a beloved pocket field guide, Coloured Vade-Mecum to the Alpine Flora was designed to be carried into the Swiss Alps and used — which makes a copy this presentable genuinely pleasing to find. The chromolithographic plates by Werner and Winter of Frankfurt are the heart of it: full-page spreads of gentians, edelweiss, alpine roses, and mountain shrubs rendered in colours that have held remarkably well over 120 years. Text runs in English, French, and German throughout, and the authors include Prof. Dr. C. Schröter of ETH Zürich, one of Switzerland's most respected alpine botanists of his generation. A working naturalist's companion that has aged into something considerably more decorative.
Cloth boards are intact and holding well, with wear at the spine ends and corners consistent with age and use. The chromolithograph cover retains strong colour. Gilt spine lettering present and fully legible. Hinges tight. Text block shows light foxing throughout, typical for paper of this period. The chromolithographic plates are clean and the colours remain vivid. Rear board has minor surface wear. A sound, presentable copy.
