The spine tells you exactly what this book is and who it belonged to in spirit: a student, a teacher, a person who cared about the art of saying something well. Francisco Sánchez Barbero's Principios de Retórica y Poética was first published in Madrid in 1805 and earned its place as one of the standard rhetoric and poetics texts in Spanish education, going through multiple editions across the first half of the 19th century. This 1840 Barcelona printing, issued posthumously some twenty years after Sánchez Barbero's death, reflects how durable his influence was. The binding is the other story here: half-leather over tree calf boards, the spine tooled in gilt neoclassical scrollwork with an oval title label, the boards showing that swirling amber-and-dark-brown grain that takes a room and doesn't apologize for it.

The binding is structurally sound and displays well. The tree calf boards are attractive and largely intact, with rubbing and wear to the corners and board edges consistent with 185 years of handling. The spine leather is dark and tight, with the gilt tooling still legible and the title panel clear. The text block shows moderate to heavy foxing throughout, with the warm amber toning to the page edges visible in the photographs. No ownership inscriptions, bookplates, or other markings anywhere in the book. A solid decorative copy whose binding carries it confidently.
