A moored sailing barge sits on still water, a windmill and a church spire low on the far horizon, thatched cottages with a red-tiled roof gathered along the right bank. The painting works the classic Dutch waterway idiom of the Hague School: muted grey-green tonality, a low horizon, and flat water holding the reflected sky. It is oil on a wood panel, small in scale, and carries a monogram in the lower right that I have not been able to resolve with confidence. The ornate gilt frame is substantial and reads as period to the work.
The painting is oil on a solid wood panel and presents as a small cabinet picture with visible age. The surface shows scattered craquelure and light surface dirt consistent with age. The paint is stable across the sky, water, and bank passages as far as can be determined from the surface.
The frame is ornate gilt composition over a wood base. It carries notable losses along the bottom rail and lower right corner, where the gesso and white substrate show through the gilding. There is additional rubbing and minor loss to the raised ornament at the outer edges. The gilt surface elsewhere is worn but intact and decorative. The reverse shows an older panel and backing with recently added hanging hardware, D-rings, wire, and felt bumpers.
No labels, stamps, or inscriptions are present on the reverse. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
