Published in 1891 by Thomas Nelson and Sons, Royal Portrait Gallery is a striking example of a late Victorian illustrated prize book produced at the height of Britain’s imperial era. Issued as part of Nelson’s celebrated Royal Prize Books series, this volume was designed to be both educational and ceremonial, intended for presentation to students as a reward for academic excellence and good conduct.

The book brings together engraved portrait illustrations and readable biographical sketches of British monarchs and royal figures, presenting the history of the crown as a visual and narrative gallery. With sixty-two illustrations, including a frontispiece portrait of Queen Victoria, the volume reflects Victorian values of duty, continuity, and national identity. These books played a significant role in shaping how history and monarchy were taught to young readers, making surviving copies both culturally and socially meaningful.
