Privately printed in 1923, The Causes for the Loss of the Battle of Waterloo by S. G. Rosenbaum is a concise military study of Napoleon’s final defeat. Rather than giving a full narrative history, Rosenbaum focuses on the specific factors that shaped the outcome at Waterloo, including failed maneuvers, poor coordination, weather conditions, and Napoleon’s own limitations on the day of battle. Written in the years after World War I, it reflects a period of renewed interest in leadership, battlefield strategy, and the reasons campaigns succeed or fail. This copy is especially appealing for its ornate full leather binding with bright gilt tooling, giving a specialized historical work a notably handsome presentation.
The leather boards remain largely vibrant, with minor rubbing or scuffing along the edges and corners consistent with age. The gilt tooling and lettering appear crisp, with only slight fading in areas of frequent handling. Internally, the pages show mild age-toning and occasional foxing, particularly near the preliminary leaves, both common in books of this period. The binding is generally secure, but the front cover has begun to separate at the top hinge, which is visible in the photographs.
