Pinnock's twelfth edition of Goldsmith's History of Rome, London, 1832, bound in half calf over richly marbled boards in red, blue, cream, and black. The spine is gilt-tooled between raised bands with a green morocco title label, and the marbling on the boards is the bold, swirling pattern that makes these Georgian schoolbooks so good on a shelf. Two folding engraved maps of the Roman Empire by S. Hall are present, both published by Whittaker and Co., showing the empire's western and full extents. A small green printed ticket from Pawson and Brailsford of Sheffield sits at the corner of the boards, and a period ink inscription appears on the front flyleaf, the handwriting confident but not fully legible. William Pinnock's improved editions of Goldsmith's popular histories were the standard classroom texts in English schools through the first half of the nineteenth century, and this copy, in its twelfth edition revised by the Irish historian W. C. Taylor of Trinity College Dublin, has the honest wear of a book that was actually read.

Condition

The binding is solid and displays well. The spine retains its gilt tooling and the green title label is fully legible, though the leather shows age-appropriate darkening and there is some wear at the head of the spine with a small separation beginning at the crown. The marbled boards are bright with good colour throughout, with light rubbing at the corners and edges consistent with age and use. The text block is tight and the pages are clean, with the light toning expected of paper this age. The two folding maps are present and intact. A period ink inscription appears on the front flyleaf; the handwriting is period-appropriate but not fully legible. The Pawson and Brailsford bookseller's ticket is present and intact at the corner of a board. A good, honest copy in age-appropriate condition.
