A pair of small Continental School cabinet paintings of single standing warriors, oil on board, sourced in Belgium. The figures belong to a tradition that traces directly to Salvator Rosa's celebrated Figurine etchings of 1656-57, a series of sixty-two small prints of soldiers and theatrical figures that became one of the most copied print series in European art and was reproduced in oil by academic painters across France, Belgium, and Italy throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. The two boards are unsigned and read as the work of a single trained academic hand. The first depicts a long-haired warrior in a billowing white shirt and red breeches, sandaled, holding a long staff with a laurel sprig at its top and a dagger at his belt. The second shows an armored soldier in plumed helmet and articulated cuirass, leaning thoughtfully on his pike, his upward gaze quiet and unhurried. Both retain their original water-gilded frames with applied compo corner ornaments, fluted sight edges, and visible red bole, period-appropriate to late 19th-century French or Belgian production. The pair was sourced together at La Belle Brocante in Belgium.

Condition

Both panels are in very good antique condition with no condition issues noted under UV examination. The original surfaces are intact across both boards, with no flaking, no inpainting, and no losses to the paint layer. Both retain a soft accumulated bloom of age-appropriate surface grime and old varnish that gives the figures their warm tonality. Pinpoint accretions and minor surface dust visible in the upper background passages of both panels are consistent with age and do not affect the figures themselves. The boards are stable and held in the original frames by hand-cut wooden butterfly retainers and small cut nails, all original to the construction.

The frames show honest matched wear consistent with 150 years of life. Both retain their original water-gilded surfaces over red bole, with the bole showing through at the sight edges and along the fluted runs in the way authentic period gilding does as it wears. The applied compo corner cartouches show small losses at the high points of the ornament, present on both frames in a matched and proportionate way. One frame shows a small loss at the upper right ornament. The fluted runs along the sight edges show some bole-darkening through worn gilding on both frames. The wooden backs are sound and original.
