A handsome mid-19th century edition of The Works of Oliver Goldsmith, published in London by Charles Daly circa 1840s to 1850s. This volume gathers Goldsmith’s best-known poems, essays, plays, and The Vicar of Wakefield, with a biographical introduction by Washington Irving. Bound in rich red calf with ornate gilt decoration, raised bands, and gilt page edges, it has strong decorative appeal as well as literary interest.
The leather remains supple and richly colored, with gilt tooling still bright and crisp. There is minor surface wear and rubbing to the edges and corners, consistent with age, and a darkened patch on the spine where a label or sticker was at some point removed. The binding is firm throughout, and the interior pages are clean with only mild age toning to the endpapers. The all-edges-gilt shimmer beautifully. Illustrations are sharp and well preserved. A very good copy overall.
