A sharp little Victorian history book with real shelf presence, this 1847 Oliver Cromwell and the Protectorate pairs a richly gilt red full leather binding with engraved illustrations throughout. It is the kind of book that works on two levels at once: attractive enough for decorative display, and genuinely interesting for readers drawn to English Civil War history, Cromwell, and the long debate over monarchy, Parliament, and power in Britain.
Written by Daniel Wilson, a Scottish historian and antiquarian, the book looks closely at Cromwell’s rise and rule during the Protectorate, one of the most contested periods in British history. Thomas Nelson published many educational and prize-style volumes in this period, and this copy has the sort of crisp gilt decoration, compact format, and illustrated interior that collectors love. It is a strong choice for buyers who want a handsome 19th century leather book with historical subject matter that still feels lively and relevant today.
A very attractive copy in full red leather with bright gilt decoration to the spine and boards. General light wear from age and handling, including minor rubbing and a few small marks to the exterior, all consistent with a book of this age. The interior is generally clean with age toning to the pages and a few scattered spots or light signs of use. A pencil notation or pricing mark appears on a rear blank endpaper. The text block is sound and the engraved illustrations present well throughout. A solid, handsome Victorian leather copy with good decorative appeal.
