An attractive 1894 first edition of The Story of Napoleon Bonaparte, published by W. & R. Chambers in London and Edinburgh. Issued in bright green pictorial cloth with black decorative stamping, this is a sharp late Victorian biography that pairs strong shelf appeal with illustrated content. Chambers marketed the book as an accessible life of Napoleon set against the history of his age, with clear appeal for general readers and younger audiences interested in European and military history.

This copy is especially appealing for its original binding and period illustrations, including the Bonaparte family tree and dramatic Napoleonic scenes such as St. Bernard and Waterloo. It works well for collectors of Napoleon material, Victorian decorative cloth bindings, and illustrated historical books. Chambers also listed the title in its popular biography series, which helps place it within the late 19th century market for affordable, visually engaging historical works.

Condition

The original green pictorial cloth binding is intact and the stamped decoration reads clearly, though the binding shows honest wear consistent with its age, including rubbing to the corners and edges and general handling wear across the boards and spine. The interior paper has foxing throughout, light to moderate in most areas, which is typical for books of this period and paper stock. The text block is structurally sound and the illustrations, including the genealogical chart and full-page scenes, are all present and legible. A solid antique copy with good shelf presence and expected age-related character.
