A handsome two-volume French set of Comédies et Proverbes by Alfred de Musset, published in Paris by Librairie des Bibliophiles, E. Flammarion successeur, 26 Rue Racine. Though the exact date is not shown here, this imprint is generally associated with the late 19th or early 20th century. Musset was one of the central voices of French Romanticism, and these plays show the qualities that made him endure: quick wit, emotional intelligence, and a sharp feel for the complications of love, pride, and social convention. Collected editions like this were produced for readers who valued both literary importance and elegant presentation.
This set is especially appealing for its refined French half leather bindings with richly gilt-decorated spines, marbled boards, and warm brown leather corners.
