A handsome 1903 prize binding of Music and Morals by Rev. H. R. Haweis, presented in full green leather with elaborate gilt tooling, a red morocco spine label, marbled endpapers, and a large gilt Marlborough College crest on the front board. It has strong shelf presence and the kind of decorative binding that appeals to collectors of antique leather books, music history, and English school prize bindings.
Haweis was a well-known Victorian writer and lecturer on music, and this work reflects the period’s interest in music as both art and moral influence. This copy is a later printing, listed on the title page as the twentieth impression, and stands out most for its binding and school prize association. Pencil notes appear on the front blanks and are included as found.
