"Mr. Romford's Hounds," first published in 1865, was Surtees's last novel, and it has the confidence of a writer who had been doing this for thirty years. The illustrations by John Leech and H. K. Browne are essential to the book rather than incidental to it. Leech in particular understood Surtees's targets, and the hand-colored plates here are vivid and well-preserved, which in a Surtees novel matters as much as the condition of the text.
The binding is half red leather over marbled boards with gilt detailing, the kind of Victorian production that was made to last and has. A clean, sturdy copy of a genuinely entertaining book.
Good condition for age. The binding shows minor wear along the edges and corners consistent with a mid-19th-century volume but remains sturdy throughout. Pages are clean with minimal foxing. The hand-colored illustrations by Leech and Browne are vibrant and well-preserved. Marbled endpapers are intact. No significant tears or missing pages. Text is crisp and legible throughout.
