The finial is where the eye lands first. It scrolls up off the dome like a handle that was never meant to be purely useful, and the beaded rim below it repeats that same restraint all the way around.
Meriden Silver Plate Company worked out of Meriden, Connecticut, in the decades when American table silver was at its most confident, and this covered dish belongs to that moment. It was built for formal service: vegetables and side dishes carried to the table under a dome, held warm between courses, then lifted off in front of everyone. The claw feet raise it off the cloth. The proportions are generous rather than delicate.
Eight inches tall is enough to command a surface, so this reads just as easily as an object on a shelf or a bar cabinet as it does in service. I like it best where the light can find the worn places.
The underside is stamped Meriden Silver Plate Co, 1839, 2, USA. The 1839 refers to company history and not to the year of manufacture, which trips up a lot of people reading American silverplate marks.
Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear throughout. There are notable surface scratches and scuffs, and areas of plate wear where warmer undertones show through the silver, consistent with Victorian silverplate that saw real use. Patina and discoloration are present, most visibly on the lid and the interior. No major dents observed. The lid seats correctly and displays well.
