Louisa M. Gray's domestic novel for girls was published by Thomas Nelson and Sons in 1889, one of the great evangelical publishing houses of the Victorian era, and this copy was awarded to a young student at West U.P. Church for earning the highest number of marks in her division. The chromolithographic cloth binding is the thing to look at: the geometric border, the floral cartouche panels, the gold script lettering on the cover and spine. Nelson produced gift-trade bindings of genuine quality, and this is a good example of that tradition.

Condition

The chromolithographic cloth binding retains its decoration well, with the gold lettering on the cover and spine remaining largely legible and the teal and maroon panels intact. The cloth shows general wear consistent with age, with rubbing to the mauve ground and fraying at the head and tail of the spine. The back board is in better condition than the front. Foxing is present on the outer page edges of the text block; the interior pages are not examined plate by plate but appear acceptable from the images available. The prize label on the front pastedown is present and substantially legible. One engraved frontispiece plate present. A fair to good copy, honest in its age, with genuine Scottish institutional provenance.
