Buffalo Red Pattern
This antique Scottish tartanware box dates to the mid to late Victorian period and features a painted red and black tartan pattern finished under a glossy varnish. Crafted from wood and decorated by hand, this piece reflects the height of Scotland’s tartanware tradition, when travel, tourism, and romantic nationalism brought Highland design to an international audience.
Boxes of this size were commonly used for small personal items such as rings, pins, or keepsakes, making them both decorative and practical. The lift-off lid and unlined interior are consistent with period examples, while the rich coloration and surface wear speak to its age and authenticity.
Condition: Corners and lid display minor wear, and the interior shows natural age-related patina and darkening. The lid fits securely, and no cracks or structural issues were observed.
