This authentic Victorian Scottish tartanware aide-mémoire dates to the mid to late 19th century and would have been used as a personal pocket notebook for recording notes, addresses, and observations while traveling. Pieces like this were popular souvenirs purchased in Scotland during the height of tartan’s popularity following Queen Victoria’s embrace of Highland culture.
The exterior features a classic tartan pattern with a neoclassical figure to the cover, reflecting Victorian ideals of learning and memory. Inside, the original red silk-lined compartments and paper pages remain, offering a beautiful glimpse into how these objects were constructed and used. The survival of the silk interior and paper elements is especially notable given their fragility.
This piece carries the quiet romance of daily Victorian life. It is an intimate, personal object rather than a purely decorative one, making it especially appealing to collectors of Scottish antiques, tartanware, and objects tied to travel and memory.
A wonderful addition to a tartanware collection, desk vignette, or cabinet of curiosities.
Condition:
This is an antique Victorian piece and shows wear consistent with age and use. The velvet binding is worn. The interior silk lining shows staining, tears, and losses. The original pencil is missing. The souvenir booklet is loose and not secured to the binding, which is commonly seen on examples of this type. There are surface scratches and marks to the exterior. All wear is consistent with a 19th-century personal object and contributes to its authentic character.
