The credit "J. Fowler. Del et Lith" — he drew it and lithographed it — appears in the lower margin, with "Maughan & Fowler, Architects Louth" printed opposite, placing it firmly within their partnership years of 1851 to 1859 and confirming 1857 as the issue date. St. Martin's Church and Schools at East Ravendale was the first new-build church-and-school ensemble Fowler ever designed, and this lithograph is his own record of it: the architect documenting his work at the moment of completion. The church, now Grade II listed, still stands and still contains its original Morris & Co. windows. Fowler himself became one of the most prolific Victorian ecclesiastical architects in England, designing or restoring over two hundred buildings in his career. The print passed through the collection of Colin Carr (1929-2002), a Lincolnshire watercolor painter whose work focused on the Grimsby and Louth area, and was given as a Christmas 1980 gift to his wife Olive, with a handwritten inscription on the verso. It was purchased from a Brigg dealer in July 2003.
The print is in good condition overall, with clear, readable hand coloring applied over a well-printed lithographic base. Color is fresh across the image, with greens, yellows, and gray-blue tones intact. Some expected toning to the paper consistent with age. I cannot assess foxing or mat burn from the photos; please inspect under the mat before listing. The title cartouche below the image is legible and intact. The plate impression is visible around the image edge, confirming this is a true intaglio or lithographic print rather than a later reproduction. The black and gold frame is in good condition with no visible losses. Glazed
