This Victorian edition of Stories About Birds: Land and Water by M. and E. Kirby is an appealing blend of natural history, children’s literature, and decorative binding design. Published by Cassell, Petter & Galpin in the 1870s to early 1880s, it reflects the period’s growing fascination with birdlife and educational books for young readers. The Kirby sisters were known for presenting nature in an accessible, engaging way, and this volume mixes factual observation with narrative charm.
What makes this copy especially appealing is its bright cobalt blue cloth binding, decorated in black and gilt with bird motifs to the front board and spine. Gilt edges add to its visual impact, and the illustrated interior gives the book both display appeal and collector interest. The binding remains bright and attractive, with strong gilt and decorative detail to the front board. The spine shows wear and fraying at the head and foot, with rubbing along the joints. Corners are bumped with some exposure to the boards beneath. Gilt edges remain bright. Internally, the endpapers are heavily foxed, with age toning throughout the text block. There are period ink inscriptions to the front endpapers and a later private collection bookplate. The binding is still sound and displays well.
