A richly bound Victorian edition of The Poetical Works of John Milton, edited by William Michael Rossetti and published in London by E. Moxon, Son & Co. Rossetti’s editorial work and memoir place Milton’s poetry within the literary culture of 19th century Britain, giving this volume added appeal for collectors of both classic English literature and Pre-Raphaelite circles.
This copy stands out for its full deep brown morocco binding with elaborate gilt tooling, dentelle turn-ins, and all edges gilt. The marbled endpapers bring strong visual contrast, and the engraved title page, frontispiece portrait, and additional illustrations give the book real presence on the shelf and in hand.
The leather binding shows visible rubbing and wear to the joints, raised bands, and corners, with some scuffing at the spine ends. There is mild cracking to the leather and some loss to the gilt detailing, but the boards remain firmly attached and the structure is sound. The gilt edges are still vibrant and make a strong impression. Internally the pages are clean overall with scattered foxing throughout, concentrated mostly around the preliminary pages and engravings. The marbled endpapers are bright and intact. A solid and striking copy with genuine presence.
