An oval panel painted with the impaled arms of a Catholic bishop, the shield set beneath a wide prelate's hat with six tassels falling to each side and a processional cross rising behind. The left half carries a dove and olive branch above a rocky mount on blue; the right, an armored arm gripping a lance beneath a red chevron and a gold star. Painted on joined boards and worn to a deep craquelure across the whole face, it reads as exactly what it is: a bishop's mark of office, made to hang and be recognized.

Heraldic Detail
The wide-brimmed hat with six tassels to each side and the single-bar cross behind the shield are the marks of a bishop in Catholic heraldry. The tassel count and the cross agree, which is what fixes the rank. The impaled shield most often joins the arms of an office with a bishop's personal arms, though without a motto or inscription the specific bearer cannot be named
Condition

The painted surface shows a deep, wide craquelure across the whole face, heaviest through the pale right half of the shield, consistent with age and a genuine paint film on wood. There is paint and gesso loss along the top edge and scattered chipping around the perimeter, with general abrasion to the dark brown ground. The blue, red, white, and gilt of the arms remain strong and fully legible. The reverse is a joined plank panel with two horizontal battens, one of which appears to have been reset, an old brass hanging ring at the top, and age cracks and old worm evidence in the boards. The panel is sound and hangs flat. Unframed. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
