A carved wood wall mirror in the Italian Rococo taste, finished in silver leaf rather than the usual gold, with soft teal-green painted accents across the shell crest and scrolls. The silver gilding is what sets it apart. Most mirrors of this style are gold and loud, while this one reads cooler and quieter, and the pale teal color gives it an unusual and collectible palette. The frame is hand carved with open C-scrolls, rocaille, a central shell crest, and applied flower rosettes. The reddish clay ground shows through at the high points where the silver has softened with age, which is exactly what you want to see on genuine leaf work.
This mirror is in good antique condition with honest wear consistent with its age. The silver leaf has softened over time, with the reddish clay ground showing through at the raised carved points, which is normal and expected on genuine leaf work and gives the piece its warm, aged surface. The teal painted accents sit down in the recesses and along the shell flutes, intact throughout with light wear. The carved frame is fully three dimensional with deep, hand carved open C-scrolls, rocaille, a plumed shell crest, and applied flower rosettes. There are no major losses or chips to the delicate carving, which is uncommon for a piece this age with this much open, fragile scrollwork. The frame is solid and structurally sound with no wobble.
The mirror plate is a later replacement, though not a recent one, and it carries some age of its own. The glass shifts slightly within the frame, which is normal for a piece like this. It is stable and secure, with no concern about it coming loose. The frame is ready to hang.

Attribution note: The Rococo style, the silver leaf finish, and the teal polychrome accenting are all consistent with Italian work of the late 19th to early 20th century. The origin and dating are based on the carving, construction, and finish rather than any maker's mark, as decorative mirrors of this type were rarely signed. The piece was acquired on the Continental market.

Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the size and weight of the item. Local pickup is available at the AMD Warehouse.
All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
