This 1905 Oxford Edition of The Ingoldsby Legends, or Mirth and Marvels by Richard Harris Barham is a handsome full leather prize binding, decorated in gilt with the school crest of Paddington and Maida Vale High School. First published in the 19th century, Barham’s lively collection of humorous, mildly gothic tales remained popular well into the Edwardian period. With blue marbled endpapers, a frontispiece portrait, and illustrations throughout, this copy offers strong decorative appeal along with literary charm. A distinctive volume for collectors of prize bindings, folklore, and classic English humor.
This copy is in very good condition. The leather shows only minor rubbing at the corners and along the spine edges, and the gilt decoration remains clear and bright throughout. The binding is firm, and the blue marbled endpapers retain their vivid coloration. Internally, the pages show expected light toning and occasional foxing consistent with a book of this period. A well-preserved and visually appealing copy overall.
