There is a note tucked into the second volume, "Amy F. Rackham. from MAP. Dec. 9. 1892," and the coincidence is a good one, because Amy is also the name of the novel's heroine. This is Charlotte Yonge's Heir of Redclyffe, the book that outsold Dickens and Thackeray in the 1850s and became a kind of scripture for the young William Morris and Burne-Jones at Oxford. Complete in two volumes, London 1853, published anonymously as was Yonge's habit. The draw here is the binding, three-quarter tan calf with raised bands, richly gilt-tooled spine compartments, and a green morocco label, over brightly marbled boards with matching marbled edges. First-edition status cannot be confirmed, so it is offered as an 1853 early edition.
Both volumes are structurally sound and hold together well. The leather spines and corners show light rubbing and age, with the gilt tooling still bright and legible. The marbled boards show notable surface loss and abrasion, most visible on the front board of the second volume where patches of the marbled paper have worn away to the substrate. Joints are tender but intact. Interiors are clean and readable with scattered light foxing and age toning typical of the period. An old pencil name and price notation appear on the endpapers along with the 1892 gift inscription. An honest, displayable set with the wear you would expect of a book of this age.
