Three small antique-bound volumes of 18th-century English verse collected and published in London by Charles Cooke as part of his celebrated Pocket Edition of Select British Poets, this copy gathers Gray, Collins, and Falconer under one binding and dates to the mid-to-late 1790s. Cooke's series was a genuine cultural project: affordable, beautifully illustrated pocket editions intended to bring the national canon of British poetry to a wider reading public. Each section opens with an engraved title page and a scenic frontispiece. Gray's elegy, Collins's odes, Falconer's maritime epic "The Shipwreck" — three poets, three very different voices, one period leather volume that looks exactly right on a library shelf.
The binding is structurally sound and displays well. The decorated spine retains its gilt tooling and both leather labels, with age-appropriate cracking and wear to the leather along the joints and at the head of the spine. The boards show surface rubbing and the characteristic mottled patina of period calf. The marbled endpapers are intact and attractive. The text block is clean with age-toning to the page edges and very minor scattered spotting; no owner markings. The engravings are present and clear. One condition issue to note: the first fourteen preliminary pages (the xiv prefatory gathering) remain connected to each other but have detached from the book block. The content is complete and present; the pages are not missing or damaged, but the gathering will require rebinding to be fully reattached. Offered as found.

Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the size and weight of the item. Local pickup is available at the AMD Warehouse.
All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
