A handsome 1830 illustrated view book on Wales, filled with engraved scenic plates of churches, estates, bridges, and historic sites across the country. Wales Illustrated, in a Series of Views was drawn by Henry Gastineau and published in London by Jones & Co., part of the early 19th century taste for topographical books that blended travel, architecture, and regional history in a format meant to be both informative and visually impressive.
This copy has strong shelf presence in a finely decorated full red leather binding with elaborate gilt borders, richly gilt spine, marbled endpapers, and gauffered gilt page edges. The large quarto format gives the engravings real impact, and the subject matter makes it appealing to collectors of British topography, Welsh history, architectural views, and decorative leather-bound books.
The full leather binding shows general rubbing, scuffing, and edge wear consistent with nearly two centuries of use. Corners and extremities show the wear expected at this age, and there are some surface marks to the boards. Internally, foxing and age-related toning are present throughout, as is standard for paper of this period and should be expected by any buyer of early 19th-century illustrated books. The binding is structurally sound with nothing loose or missing, and the engraved plates appear intact. This is an honest copy of a scarce and desirable book, displaying well despite its age.
