A French ormolu picture frame in the Louis XVI revival taste, made for the dressing table or boudoir to display a small portrait photograph or miniature. The circular frame is crowned with an open-work cast crest of ribbon bows, roses, and foliate scrolls — the most characteristic form of this type — and the outer rim is chased with egg-and-dart and beading. Between the outer rim and the inner rope-twist sight ring, two cast laurel branch appliqués are applied directly to the cream silk moiré mat, a detail that lifts this example above the plainer versions of the same form. The original domed convex glass is intact. The frame stands on a gilt wire tripod easel and can also be hung from the ring at the apex of the crest. A retailer's mark is impressed into the blue velvet backing board, indicating this frame was sold through a London fancy goods or photographic accessories shop, as was common practice for quality French ormolu frames throughout the late Victorian period.
