A French bouillotte lamp in silverplate over brass, with its original oval black tôle shade. The bouillotte form originated in 18th-century France as a purpose-built card table light, designed so the shade could be raised and lowered on a central post to redirect light as candles burned down. This example follows that classic two-arm format, with turned urn-form candle cups rising from a shaped cartouche base on ball feet, and a brass square-section center post carrying the adjustable oval tôle shade trimmed in gilt. It has been converted to battery-operated use with E14 candelabra sockets, making it plug-free and cord-free, which works well on a desk, console, or reading table.
The lamp is in well-worn antique condition throughout. The silverplate on the base and candle arms shows significant wear, with the underlying brass substrate visible at multiple points, particularly on the base platform and the vertical post. The turned urn-form candle cups retain more plate than the flat surfaces. The tôle shade exterior is black with gilt trim at the top and bottom rims; the exterior shows surface scratching, scuffing, and general wear across the body, with a visible long scratch on the lower section and marks consistent with age and handling. The interior of the shade is cream-painted metal with heavy rust-colored spotting and staining throughout, which is visible when the lamp is lit. The shade bracket hardware has been fitted with a replacement Phillips-head screw in place of the original locking key mechanism. The original finial is missing; the top of the post is open without a cap. One candle sleeve is loose at its fitting. The ball feet are present and the base structure is sound. The lamp accepts two E14 candelabra-base bulbs and has been set up for battery-operated use.
While this lamp has been rewired, we strongly recommend having it inspected and, if needed, rewired by a licensed electrician before use. It is sold as a decorative antique/vintage item, and Austyn Marie Design is not responsible or liable for any malfunction, damage, or injury resulting from its use or electrical operation.
